The Sky Lights digital installations in the Columbia Center lobby go beyond the normal, static office sculpture by presenting information about environmental conditions through color and animation.
Each sculpture, assembled from high-resolution LED tubes, displays a different set of information. One of the sculptures changes color based on visibility, another changes with the temperature and the third reflects the position of the sun and the phase of the moon. In addition to changing color, each sculpture has a set of animations, as well, that reflect other environmental factors, such as wind velocity of the arrival of solar noon.
All of the installations have day modes and night modes, and display a special, animated “chime” every hour on the hour, transforming them into clocks as well.
